AB - To find the most appropriate Hangul characters for indicating pronunciations of fricatives ([s] and [ɕ]) and affricates ([ts] and [tɕ]) in a Japanese monosyllable, native Japanese speakers listenedto native Korean speakers' pronunciations of the Hangul characters and identified them as one of the Japanese monosyllables with fricatives and affricates. The native Japanese speakers' identification ratio revealed that Hangul character ssseu, syu and chyu (or jyu) were most appropriate for pronouncing Japanese su, shu, and chu, respectively. However, no appropriate Hangul character was found for Japanese tsu, and 98.8% pronunciations of sseu were misperceived as su, not as tsu, by native Japanese speakers. These results, except for shu, do not agree with the public notifications by the National Institute of Korean Language (NIKL) about Hangul characters for Japanese monosyllables.
