The Development of Discourse in the OPI Role-Play of Korean Japanese Intermediate Learners: Focusing on the Use of Strategies and Sociolinguistic Abilities Seen in Discourse Development

In this study, the discourse development pattern was examined using data that included requisition, request, favor, and negotiation, as observed in the role-play section of the OPI test administered to Korean-Japanese intermediate learners. The focus of the analysis is on the flow of strategy use, as demonstrated in discourse development and the sociolinguistic abilities of Japanese intermediate learners, which can be observed through this. As a result of the analysis, the following were found.　1.　In the context of 'requisition,' it is noted that the approach often exhibits a somewhat self-centered nature, beginning with an apology that demonstrates consideration for the other party, or persisting in explaining the situation even after receiving a slight rejection. This occurs despite the claim being made for rights that may not be guaranteed. Furthermore, subjective strategies, including explaining the situation, expressing opinions, and suggesting solutions, were employed. 2. With regard to 'request,' relatively neutral strategies, such as the clarification of the situation and confirmation of the situation, were utilized repeatedly. The premise of 'guaranteed rights' played a significant role, presuming that the other party would acquiesce even if the speaker did not assert his or her opinion strongly. 3. In the case of 'favor,' it became evident that there was a lack of consideration for the other party, as indicated by the method of presenting conclusions upfront before inquiring about their intentions. This raises the possibility that the perception of 'Korean' requests as abrupt and coercive emanates from the reciprocal social culture in Korea, which views enduring inconvenience as a facet of friendship. 4. In the realm of 'negotiation,' it was confirmed that the Koreans' tendency for 'active self-expression' and 'clear communication' can lead to frictions in interactions with Japanese counterparts. Additionally, it is observed that this tendency may result in individualistic behavior, stemming from a desire for Koreans' feelings to be acknowledged and respected.

An Analysis of Trends and Achievements in Corpus Linguistics: Using the Text Mining Method

This study uses text mining to identify and describe the trends and outcomes in the field of “Japanese corpus linguistics.” It specifically aims to clarify when corpora were first utilized within Japanese linguistics and Japanese language education, as well as to highlight the domains that have been studied most extensively. As part of the methodology, the Google Scholar search tool was employed to gather research results that included the terms “Japanese language” and “corpus.” Text mining was then performed using KH Coder on the titles of 1,117 research papers and books published between 1995 and 2024. A summary of the analytical results is provided below. [1] Text mining was used to extract high-frequency words from the titles of academic papers and books. Corpus linguistics is most commonly applied in the field of “Japanese language education,” with the terms “learner” (150 occurrences), “native language” (111 occurrences), and “Japanese language education” (59 occurrences) being among the most frequent. [2] The corpus is categorized into several types: “spoken corpus,” “written corpus,” “learner corpus,” “historical corpus,” and others. The frequency of word occurrences was analyzed in each category. As a result, research is being conducted across various domains, with particular emphasis on spoken corpus (268 occurrences) and written corpus (213 occurrences), where research activity is exceptionally robust. [3] “Hierarchical cluster analysis” and a “co-occurrence network” were conducted to examine the similarities among the top 100 extracted terms. Additionally, the year of publication was set as an external variable to confirm the trends and results of the corpus study over the past 30 years. Research has been conducted in the following sequence: a parallel corpus, a spoken corpus, a written corpus, and a Japanese learner corpus.

On the Typology of Reflexive Causative Expressions: From the Perspective of Verb Transitivity Pairs

This paper examines the morphological correspondence between intransitive and transitive verbs to propose a novel classification system that identifies the conditions under which reflexive causative expressions can be constructed in the Japanese language. Previous research has predominantly framed such expression within a lexical context, positing that the causative form of an intransitive verb compensates for the absence of a corresponding transitive verb. This study, however, argues that the actual distribution of reflexive causatives is significantly more complex and cannot be fully encapsulated by this binary model. The paper introduces seven distinct categories of reflexive causative constructions based on verb transitivity. Types [I] and [II] pertain to paired verbs, wherein Type [I] encompasses instances where both intransitive and transitive verbs exist, yet no reflexive causative expression is generated. In contrast, Type [II] features the coexistence of reflexive causatives alongside corresponding intransitive-transitive pairs. Types [III] through [VII] involve non-paired verbs; Type [III] includes solely intransitive forms that do not yield reflexive causatives, while Type [IV] is constituted by intransitive forms that do. Type [V] contains only transitive verbs that lack a corresponding intransitive form. Type [VI] involves reflexive causatives paired with transitive verbs, even in the absence of an intransitive form. Lastly, Type [VII] presents reflexive causatives without any corresponding transitive or intransitive form. Furthermore, the paper examines pragmatic distinctions among paired verbs, elucidating the semantic and stylistic contrasts between unmarked transitive causatives and marked intransitive causative forms. The former typically describe straightforward outcomes in informal registers, while the latter accentuate causes or backgrounds, often appearing in more formal or literary contexts. An analysis of the coexistence of reflexive and transitive causatives reveals that the two forms functionally complement each other. Conversely, when only reflexive causatives are present, they not only satisfy transitive syntactic roles but may also express intentional causation, contingent upon the discourse context.

Conditional Expressions in Imperial Japanese of the Acquisition Stage as Observed in the Diary of an Elementary School Student During the Japanese Colonial Period

This paper presents an analysis of the characteristics of conditional expressions, specifically ‘TO, TARA, BA, NARA,’ as utilized in a diary written by an elementary school student who acquired Japanese as a second language within a colonial language acquisition environment. The findings of this study detail the longitudinal mechanisms that explain the changes in forms and usage of these Japanese conditional expressions, in comparison with data collected from the attrition stage of Japanese generations sharing similar attributes. The key results of the analysis are summarized as follows: (a) The conditional expressions observed in the acquisition-stage Japanese of the primary education generation are used with a high degree of accuracy about both form and function, indicating that these expressions may have gradually regressed during the attrition stage following the cessation of contact with the Japanese language. (b) A comparative analysis of conditional expressions from both the acquisition stage and the attrition stage reveals that while the acquisition stage predominantly features TO, there is a noticeable trend towards the convergence of forms to TARA during the attrition stage. (c) In terms of the frequency and accuracy of conditional expressions used by the primary school generation across the acquisition and attrition stages, the usage of NARA and BA was primarily limited to fundamental applications during the acquisition stage, and this limited usage persisted throughout the attrition stage. Conversely, TARA and TO retained their essential applications during the attrition phase. (d) An examination of the conditional expressions used between the acquisition and attrition stages reveals prominent features, including the speaker’s perspective, modifications in modality and tense at the sentence’s conclusion, and errors in verb conjugation.
