ABSTRACT

(1) This study examines the acquisition patterns of sentence-final particles among Korean, Chinese, and English-speaking learners of Japanese in polite-style discourse, focusing on both universal tendencies and language-specific influences. Data from native Japanese speakers served as a benchmark for assessing learner norms. Both learners and native speakers demonstrate strong collocational relationships between sentence-final particles and verbal predicates in polite style, as well as adjectival predicates in plain style. Notably, learners exhibit a higher incidence of particle-verb collocation in plain style. (2) The use of particles in polite style increases with proficiency, particularly among Korean learners. This phenomenon is attributed to: (a) grammatical similarities between Korean and Japanese that facilitate acquisition, and (b) the transfer of Korean honorific norms, which results in the frequent use of the structure“plain form + n-desu + particle” as a strategy to circumvent complex conjugations. (3) Chinese learners tend to underutilize particles in polite style while overusing them in plain style. This behavior reflects transfer effects from Chinese modal particles, which are typically confined to formal discourse but are also prevalent in informal speech. (4) English learners primarily use the particle “ne” across both speech styles, demonstrating a distribution pattern that parallels that of native speakers.
