ABSTRACT

This study, utilizing data from Yasuda’s (2023) OPI interviews, investigated the impact of instructional methods that target two significant causes of miscommunication: (1) phonological features and (2) differences in meaning and pronunciation. The instruction encompassed seven specific areas, including the conversion of vowel + "r" into a long vowel, the Korean vowel "애" aligned with the Japanese "ア," and consonant correspondences such as "ㅍ" transitioning to "fa/fi/fu/fe/fo," among others. By leveraging learners’ native language knowledge and employing a contrastive approach, the rate of correct responses increased from 92.9% to 98.6%, marking a 5.7% improvement and demonstrating a deeper comprehension of the material. Furthermore, specific learners proactively inferred and applied phonological rules associated with loanwords, thereby demonstrating their positive engagement in the language acquisition process. Post-instruction surveys revealed that 50% of learners became somewhat more aware of loanword use, indicating a conscious shift in awareness among all participants.
