ABSTRACT

In Japanese, a mora-based language, the duration of vowels is not influenced by the structure of syllables, whereas in a syllable-based language like Korean, the duration of vowels in closed syllables is shorter than the duration of vowels in open syllables. However, the curtailment in the duration of vowels in all closed syllables needs to be identified because most of the previously conducted studies that have delved into Korean have selected only one or two final consonants in syllables among all seven consonants. Thus, the present study introduced an experiment for native Korean speakers wherein the speakers pronounced closed syllables containing the seven final consonants in syllables to analyze and compare the duration of each vowel therein with corresponding vowels contained in open syllables. The results obtained from the analysis revealed that closed syllables containing final consonants of nasal sound [m, n, ŋ] had significantly shorter duration of vowels than the vowels in open syllables, while closed syllables with final consonants of non-nasal sound showed no significant differences in duration of vowels from vowels contained in the open syllables.
