ABSTRACT

In this paper, using the letters and images on the packages as clues, I researched the local identity which projected on the character notation of Yokohama written in the name of the products selected for the confectionery department of “Yokohama Goods 001(ヨコハ マ・グッズ横濱001)”, a business to nurture the local brand of Yokohama. The following four points were drawn from the study. (1) Of the 39 products whose name include the place name of Yokohama, there were 17 cases (43.6%) of “横浜”, 17 cases (43.6%) of “横濱 , 4 cases (10.3%) of “ヨコハマ”, 1 case (2.6%) of “YOKOHAMA”, and no other cases. (2) It is thought that the “specialties and famous places”, “current figure” of the region and the local identity as “a town that continues to be a stage for new narratives, while inheriting history” are projected on the kanji notation, “横浜”. (3) It is thought that the “historicity”, “past figure” of the region and the image of “high-class” are projected on the kanji notation mixed with the old letter, “横濱”. (4) It is thought that the local identity as “port town” and the image of “friendliness beyond generations” are projected on the katakana notation, “ヨコハマ”.
