ABSTRACT

The current study explores the (dis)similarities in the complaint expressing act among Korean, Chinese, Japanese and Australian by surveying 673 university students in these languages. Main findings of this study can be summarized as follows. Regarding the complaint expressing acts to a stranger, basically, the rate of expressing complaints through nonverbal behavior (facial expression, sigh, dry cough, etc.) was higher than the rate of expressing them through direct/indirect words in all the four countries. Regarding the complaint expressing acts to an acquaintance, more than 70% of participants expressed complaints through direct or indirect words in all four countries. Putting together results of eight scenes in this study regardless of gender, the degree of the context dependence in complaint expressing acts was high in the order of Japan, Australia, China, then Korea. This means that in the way of expressing complaints, the weight of verbal expressions is higher than nonverbal behavior in the order of Korea, China, Australia, then Japan.
