ABSTRACT

This study aims to describe adviser’s third-turn response in the assessment process for culturally and linguistically diverse children who need Japanese language education as a second language, using Conversation Analysis. In the process, advisers are required to create an atmosphere which allows children to participate actively. At the stage of asking basic questions, it was observed that the adviser acknowledges the answer and then receives it again in a way that displays one’s own stance toward the answer. At the stage of checking vocabularies, contrastingly, there were not many third turns. However, the third-turn responses observed in limited situations were considered to be conducive to creating an atmosphere for active participation by children. For example, the evaluation was often produced in the third turn when the instructions on how to answer were given in the first turn, which was described as one method to prevent children from feeling confused or uncomfortable.
