AB - The present study aims to explore perspectives for capturing the experience of communication for the exchange of feedback on academic writing (hereinafter “text comment communication”). This paper captures the experience of text comment communication through semi-structured interviews. In particular, this paper focuses on the narratives of persons who provided comments (hereinafter “reviewers”) of their experiences of becoming worried or concerned as a result of miscommunication (hereinafter “concerning experiences”). This paper reports the results of qualitative analysis of the narratives of three participants who provided particularly “deep narratives”, in order to identify the factors that underlie concerning experiences.
The results of the analysis revealed that factors that underlie concerning experiences exist beyond the scenes of communication. Specifically, it is shown that individuals’ internal factors such as attitudes and beliefs toward text comment communication are involved. The results suggest the need to include such internal factors as perspectives in analyses for capturing the experiences of academic writing text comment communication.
Based on these results, we aim to gain a deeper understanding of various situations of text comment communication on academic writing, and apply them to Japanese language education at undergraduate and graduate schools and other higher education institutions where academic writing is taught.
