ABSTRACT

This study observes 309 papers on Japanese language education research published between 2021 and 2022, divides them into ten fields, and reports on overall research trends, with the focus on “acquisition/misuse.” Among these ten fields, research on “teaching/learning” was the greatest in number, followed by “acquisition/misuse,” “textbooks/teaching materials,” and “teacher/students.” A total of 59 papers were found in the “acquisition/misuse” field, which has increased in recent years. These papers have been summarized mainly based on analytical materials and analytical viewpoints, which reveals that various approaches are adopted for analysis. In particular, research on the acquisition of “grammar” is progressing, followed by “vocabulary,” “discourse/writing,” “misuse in general,” “phonetic/pronunciation,” “characters/notation,” “conversational ability,” and “learning factors/attrition”. We hope that research on learner language will continue to increase, and that we can share and disseminate these results of analyses using various approaches. In particular, we hope that voices from educational settings will uncover new issues and lead to further research.
