ABSTRACT

This is a summary of current trends and prospects in the studies on the history of the Japanese language, focusing on research carried out in South Korea in 2021/2022. The study analyzed 97 papers on Japanese language history that were published in South Korea during this time period. The results of the study are as follows: Firstly, out of 1,906 papers on Japanese language-related topics that were published during the period, only 97 papers (5.1%) were related to the history of the Japanese language. However, this is an increase of six papers compared to the previous survey conducted in 2019-2020. Secondly, in terms of research fields, grammar (25 papers) was the most common, followed by phonology (23 papers), lexicology (19 papers), characters/notation (18 papers), and others (12 papers). Compared to the previous survey, research on characters/notation, lexicology, and grammar increased, while research on phonology and others decreased. Thirdly, research based on a synchronic perspective (87.6%) was overwhelmingly more common than research based on a diachronic perspective (12.4%). Fourthly, analyzing the distribution of research results by era, there were many studies on Early Modern Japanese, especially those that explained the nature of vocabulary at the time empirically or theoretically. Fifthly, while the papers were written in three languages (Korean, Japanese, and English), Korean accounted for 72.2% of them. Sixthly, the National Institute for Japanese Language and Linguistics in Japan updates the Corpus of Historical Japanese (CHJ) every year. The expansion of this corpus is expected to have a positive impact on research on Japanese language history in South Korea, resulting in even more diverse research results.
