ABSTRACT

The purpose of this paper is to construct a highly accurate measurement tool for Japanese language proficiency. To achieve this, the author conducted Item Response Theory (IRT) analysis on the items of the “Illinois Test of Psycholinguistic Abilities (ITPA) for Language Learning Ability,” which was previously used as a measurement tool for second language ability in the author's previous study. After reviewing each of the 100 items used to assess the language proficiency of learners studying Japanese as a second language, based on criteria such as “item difficulty”, “discriminating power of the item”, and “standard error”, unsuitable items were identified and removed. As a result, a new measurement tool was constructed by eliminating these items. 38 items (19 for words meaning, 10 for words analogy, and 9 for grammatical structure) were deleted, and 62 items (17 for words meaning, 25 for words analogy, and 20 for grammatical structure) were selected. In addition, measurement that matches the level of ability became possible by using the test information function. The information obtained through the analysis could be applied to supplementing item types and developing new items in the future.
