ABSTRACT

This study will describe how the Japanese response token “naruhodo” works as an interactional resource, from the perspective of Conversation Analysis. The token has been mostly analyzed, independently from its interactional context, as showing merely understanding, agreement, compromise, etc. In our analysis, we argue that “naruhodo” is recurrently used just before the same speaker’s disaffiliative action, e.g. disagreement, or rejecting. By doing this, the speaker can display their understanding of their interlocutor’s preceding utterance, helping to prevent potential misunderstandings.
