ABSTRACT

In this study, verbal behaviors related to "ねぎらい(negirai)" were examined through two different surveys. The first is a survey of Korean translations of original Japanese works, and examines how "ねぎら い" expressions appear in Japanese and Korean, especially in a formulaic context. The second survey examined "ねぎらい" in both Japanese and Korean languages through conversations between native speakers from both countries. Furthermore, the definition of "ねぎらい" was reconsidered. After reviewing previous research, this study defined "ねぎらい" as a kind of toil (regardless of specificity) that is expressed without clear emotion. It is an attempt to create good feelings for those who have toiled by expressing an acknowledgement that their struggles are clearly present. Furthermore, the survey results reveal that "ねぎらい" is expressed when the difficulties of the toiling party does not involve a benefit to the other participant. In addition, it was suggested that "ねぎらい" may appear when there is a bias toward toil felt between speakers.
