ABSTRACT

This study analyzed differences in discourse structure and thematic progression in political election speeches between Korea and Japan, and contrasted the discourse construction attitudes of political communication between the two countries. In the campaign speech scene, politicians from both Korea and Japan set a large number of voters as listeners, and promote their policies and appeal for the voters’ support. Despite this common purpose, politicians in two countries are assumed to use different attitudes to each other in constructing discourse. Based on this assumption, the current study aims to clarify discourse construction and thematic progression in politician speeches in Korea and Japan. As a result of the analysis, political communication in Japan was centered on the delivery of the relevant information in election speeches. By contrast, Korean politicians prioritized the formation of a discourse of emotional sharing that appeals to voters’ emotions through criticism and political attacks against opposing candidates rather than policy explanations. This difference can be understood as being influenced by different socio-cultural factors between Korea and Japan. It can be seen that ideological confrontation is more prominent in Korean society than in Japanese society. Considering that politicians’ attitudes toward voters, their relationships with voters, and their social and political backgrounds affect the choice of micro-level discourse composition and specific language behavior, this study offered an opportunity to understand the differences in discourse formation attitudes in political communication between the two countries.
