ABSTRACT

The ‘O/Go-suru’ form is traditionally seen as a humble expression (humble language A) in Japanese honorific language, but previous studies have pointed out that it has the beautification usage and the respect-expression usage. This study aims to clarify how native Japanese speakers perceive and use the ‘O/Go-suru’ form by collecting and categorizing examples of frequently used verbs in this form from the ‘NINJAL Web Japanese Corpus’, irrespective of its normative function. The findings reveal that the use of the ‘O/Go-suru’ form in modern Japanese includes not only humble expressions but also beautifying and respect-signifying usages, as well as other uses that do not fit into any of these categories. The study elucidates the actual state of how commonly the ‘O/Go-suru’ form, often used in everyday language, is applied across different honorific expressions and identifies variations in usage trends among different verbs. The reasons for these phenomena, especially in the context of specific verbs, will be a subject of future research.
