AB - This paper analyses the semantic change seen in Anglicisms in Japanese by suggesting a typology. 72 Anglicisms that have been through significant semantic change are extracted from the GLAD database and classified to analyse the cause and process of semantic change in Anglicisms. They are classified into (a) semantic replacement, (b) semantic shift and (c) semantic transfer, each of which is further classified into the following subclasses: (a-1) reanalysis and (a-2) confusion with close concept; (b-1) semantic extension, (b-2) semantic narrowing and (b-3) change in POS for (b); and (c-1) metaphorical transfer, (c-2) metonymic transfer and (c-3) transfer of names for (c). Subsequently, each category is elaborated with the examples of semantic change. This paper also analyses the factors that contribute to such semantic change and points out that it is a natural change that occurs in the process of borrowing which involves the removal of a word from the lexical system of a donor language into the new linguistic and social context of the recipient language.
