ABSTRACT

This paper focused on the types of restrictive adverbs and their usages, and examined their common meanings and grammatical characteristics, by taking a closer look at their functions in the causative sentence in Japanese. The main points of contention are summarized as follows. Among the semantic characteristics of restrictive adverbs used in Japanese causative sentences, estimation methods and evaluation types are the most common. Further, from the type of exclusive limitation that alone acts to limit the range of words and phrases, it is biased toward a typical command causative role and seems to be correlated with a will verb of the causer. Finally, in comparison with other contrasting words and phrases, it can be confirmed that the two situations co-occur with a causative role connected by a strong causal relationship and reflect the subjective aspect of the speaker. Common characteristics found in the semantic types of these three restrictive adverbs can be seen as conveying the speaker’s subjective attitudes and intentions. This study pointed out that in Japanese, the grammatical characteristic of restrictive adverbs in the causative sentence is that it is not necessarily obligatory for the adverb to be located immediately before the object, unlike typical restrictive adverbs used in other types of sentences. In addition, it was pointed out that the restrictive adverb used in the causative modifies not only a volitional verb but also a causative predicate the main verb of which is non-volitional. In sum, this paper examined the restrictive adverbs that appeared in causative sentences in Japanese, and clarified their comprehensive linguistic features prior to conducting a detailed examination of individual types and usage items of the adverb.
