ABSTRACT

Following the pandemic, the time is opportune to rethink the role of education. Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) is drawing attention as one of the effective methods for developing social skills. At first, SEL was started as a prevention education program to reduce school maladjustment in the US. These days, SEL is spreading widely and rapidly in Korea and Japan as an effective approach to reform elementary and secondary education after the pandemic. The purpose of this study is to develop a SEL program for international students in Korean and Japanese universities. This paper is an exploratory literature research to marshal definitions about SEL and analyze how SEL was introduced and established in Korea and Japan. In Korea, the government opened the way for practical research about SEL to be investigated intensely, consistent with the policy of the OECD. On the other hand, a private association called “SEL-8 group” was founded in Japan, which takes a central role in developing SEL programs for elementary, junior high, high school students, and university students who study in teachers' training courses. But most of the research and practices of SEL programs in Korea and Japan are created for elementary and secondary educations, and there are few cases for higher education institutions. As Korea has a lot in common with Japan in terms of the policy of international students, comparing research and practices regrading SEL between the two countries, and utilizing information acquired from our previous studies about intercultural competences will contribute to the development of suitable SEL programs for international students in Korean and Japanese universities.
