ABSTRACT

In this paper, we discuss the practice of Human Library in language education. In existing Human Libraries, the main objective has been to listen to the voices of minority individuals, engage in dialogue, and reduce prejudice. In contrast, the Human Library addressed in this paper focuses on the theme of “Majority-ness of the Japanese People” and considers dialogue as a language education practice to encourage awareness of one's own majority-ness. After the practice, the authors conducted interviews to explore what participants (“books,” “readers,” “librarians”) realized about their own majority-ness and what intentions they developed. As a result, the “linguistic activities” in the Human Library were found to stimulate participants' thoughts on their majority-ness, move towards articulating it, and bring them closer to becoming “allies” who take some action against discrimination and injustice in society.
