Difficulties in the Japanese-Language Life of Korean Newcomers: Based on the Life Story of Housewives

This study, based on a survey of life-story interviews of three Korean native-speaker homemakers living in Japan, considered the challenges they encountered and their response styles. The subjects felt uncomfortable and did not feel free to use Japanese because of their lack of Japanese proficiency and the difference in communication style between Koreans and Japanese. First, the frequent difficulties due to lack of Japanese proficiency were in the medical scene; the Japanese actively responded to the medical scene because of its urgency, importance, and predictability of communication. On the other hand, even in unexpected situations such accidents, it was difficult to predict Japanese communication, so the response was usually passive on the part of the subjects. Next, in the difficulties caused by differences in communication styles between the two languages, intercultural sensitivity or attitude of accepting interculturalism was combined, and the responses were varied. Many response processes were seen, such as conflict between the communication styles of the two languages, accepting the cultural aspect, taking a defensive response attitude in the language aspect, and changing the direction of passive response due to the failure of active response. Difficulties caused by a lack of Japanese proficiency can be addressed relatively quickly if an issue is recognized, and anxiety about problems can be resolved to some extent by improving Japanese proficiency. However, individual personality or values affect the response to difficulties caused by communication style. Therefore, even if the factor of difficulty is recognized, it takes time through a complex response process, and it is sometimes impossible to judge the appropriate response uniformly.
