ABSTRACT

This paper examines silent behaviors in borrowing situations, focusing on changes in the behavior and attitudes of both initiators and recipients in Japanese and Korean interpersonal communication. The findings are summarized as follows: <Changes in Initiators’ Behavior> ・Changes since the early 2000s include: 1) For "mother" and "close friend" categories, while silent behaviors are still more prevalent in Korea compared to Japan, the gap has narrowed due to a slight increase in Japan and a decrease in Korea. 2) For "younger siblings," Japan has seen a slight increase in silent behaviors, whereas Korea has experienced a sharp decline, resulting in a higher frequency of such behaviors in Japan compared to Korea. ・Overall, silent behaviors are becoming less acceptable in Korea, and the finding from the earlier study (2009) that "borrowing without asking is more acceptable in Korea than Japan, particularly in close relationships" no longer holds in 2023. <Changes in Recipients’ Attitudes> ・Overall, the acceptance level in Korea has decreased, narrowing the gap between Japan and Korea compared to the early 2000s. ・Silent behaviors are more acceptable among family members than friends. However, the gap between "family" and "friends" has widened in Korea compared to the early 2000s due to a decrease in acceptance of friends' silent behaviors, whereas Japan has seen little change. These results are based on a limited scope and thus should be generalized with caution. Future research should consider various social changes and set new scenes and items for investigation to further explore changes in interpersonal communication behaviors and attitudes. This will be a focus for future studies.
