AB - This study conducts a morpho-semantic and etymological analysis of 529 lexical pseudo-Anglicisms (LPAs) in Japanese, based on a list compiled by the author. The analysis of head structures reveals the presence of left-headed and reversible compounds, which are absent in native Japanese compounds, suggesting possible syntactic influence from English. Additionally, numerous headless (exocentric) compounds were identified, many of which involve metonymic semantic shifts that are difficult to interpret, highlighting the flexible semantic interpretation of LPAs. The morpho-semantic classification shows that while LPAs exhibit diverse morphological types, they largely adhere to the structural rules of Japanese compounding, without significant deviation. Etymological analysis, based on morphological similarities with the source language, reveals that many LPAs are created to express concepts that do not exist in English. However, a significant number of LPAs also show morphological similarities to their English etymons, suggesting that replacements may be motivated by a desire to enhance semantic clarity in Japanese.
