AB - In this paper, we focus on the use of causative sentences and examine the grammatical characteristics of the aspect meaning of “-(s)aseteiru.” The main points of discussion are as follows: First, it is noted that prototypical causative sentences express the idea of “influencing someone to perform an action.” These sentences typically follow the structure of an embedded clause: “a certain entity X makes another entity Y do (something).” Consequently, the aspectual meaning of the “-(s)aseteiru” form can be interpreted as indicating the continuation of the causer's action, as well as the continuation of the causee’s action in response to that influence.
Second, in the case of non-prototypical causative sentences, it was found that while the syntactic structure remains the same, the aspectual meaning of the continuous form “-(s)aseteiru” varies depending on the nature of the causer. Specifically, for the “-(s)aseteiru” form that is acceptable meaning and usage, it was confirmed that the movement indicated by the original verb is perceived as a continuation of the causer’s action, which originates from the users themselves. Moreover, the aspectual meaning of the imperfective in the causative sentence is not simply viewed as representing continuousness; instead, it can also be understood as a continuous result when both the causative and the resulting events are linked to a specific point in time.
