ABSTRACT

This study examines the functions and roles of interrogative expressions used by streamers during live video streaming from an interactional perspective. The analysis reveals that these interrogative expressions serve purposes beyond mere information-seeking, summarized as follows. (A) Interrogative expressions function as a means for streamers to check and fine-tune the communication channel required for effective interaction with their viewers. (B) Streamers use these expressions to guide the broadcast’s direction and options, engaging viewers in the stream’s progression and enabling flexible, co-creative management of the broadcast. (C) By expressing interest in viewers, fostering empathy, and encouraging their participation in joint actions, interrogative expressions position viewers as active contributors. This approach helps reduce psychological stress and promotes a sense of familiarity between the streamer and the audience. These findings indicate that interrogative expressions are a critical linguistic tool in live video streaming, serving various functions related to managing the communication channel, advancing the broadcast, and fostering relationships.
