ABSTRACT

This study aims to examine the effects of sentence-level listening instruction on the listening comprehension abilities of learners of Japanese, building on Tsuneyoshi's (2025b) findings regarding mora- and word-level listening instruction. In the study, sentence-level listening instruction incorporating visual information was implemented, and its effectiveness was analyzed. The results showed that, overall, no marked improvement in listening ability was observed, unlike the significant gains reported in word-level listening instruction. However, these findings suggest that learners’ auditory perception at the mora and word levels does not necessarily correspond to the auditory processing abilities required for sentence comprehension. Furthermore, among beginner learners, a limited instructional effect was observed for the contrast between /ze(ゼ)/ and /je(ジェ). In contrast, a clear instructional effect was found for /zu(ズ)/ and /ju(ジュ)/, indicating that instructional effectiveness may vary depending on the type of sound. In addition, even learners who demonstrated high accuracy in word-level listening experienced increased difficulty when the target sounds appeared within sentences, and such difficulty tended to be resistant to improvement through instruction. Based on these results, this study highlights the need to implement parallel instruction integrating mora- and word-level sound-perception training with sentence-level listening instruction.
