ABSTRACT

The purpose of this paper is to examine language “misuse”(誤用) and “variation” (ゆれ) from the perspective of Japanese language education, focusing on the expression “akaraka to naru” (明らかとなる). While certain established rules govern all languages, speakers may unconsciously deviate from these guidelines in actual communication. In Japanese, such deviations are categorized as “misuse” or “variation” and are observed among both non-native and native speakers. Consequently, it is not always appropriate to view these non-standard usages as errors, as language evolves continuously alongside social development. This study investigates the actual use of “akaraka to naru,” which is traditionally considered grammatically incorrect in standard Japanese, through corpus analysis and questionnaire surveys. The results show that, although its frequency is lower than that of the standard form “akaraka ni naru” (明らかになる), it is widely used by native speakers in everyday conversation. Furthermore, this usage tends to be naturally acquired by learners of Japanese as a foreign language. Based on these findings, this paper offers several pedagogical suggestions for addressing non-standard but commonly used forms in Japanese language education.
