AB - This study examines naming strategies in the comment sections of Korean and Japanese news videos related to the Korea–Japan summit, held in Gyeongju, Republic of Korea, on October 30, 2025. The analysis focuses on the distribution of naming strategies, high-frequency keywords, notable comment examples, and co-occurrence networks to identify the discursive characteristics of online public responses in both languages.
The findings indicate a statistically significant difference in the overall distribution of naming strategies between Korean and Japanese comments. Korean comments tended to use more personalized naming strategies, particularly by referring to political leaders as individuals, using collective pronouns, and labeling political groups. In contrast, Japanese comments exhibited a stronger inclination toward nation- and group-oriented naming, particularly utilizing country names, group labels, and terms related to diplomatic issues.
Keyword and case analyses further indicate that Korean comments tend to interpret the summit through person-centered evaluation and speaker identification. In contrast, Japanese comments tend to frame it in terms of interstate relations and diplomatic concerns. Co-occurrence network analysis also revealed distinct semantic structures: Korean comments formed a network centered on leader evaluation and collective identification, whereas Japanese comments formed a more issue-centered network organized around national relations and diplomatic topics.
These findings suggest that the same diplomatic event can be interpreted through various discursive frameworks, depending on the linguistic and sociocultural context.
