ABSTRACT

The purpose of this paper is to examine gender representation in the listening section of the Japanese-Language Proficiency Test (JLPT), focusing on occupational roles, sentence-final expressions, and the use of sentence-final particles. Although male and female speakers appear in similar numbers, male speakers are more often assigned higher-status positions, whereas female speakers tend to be depicted in limited or subordinate roles. Additionally, asymmetric patterns, such as “male plain form” and “female polite form,” are frequently observed. These findings suggest that the JLPT, despite its seemingly neutral structure, contains underlying patterns of gender representation.
