ABSTRACT

This study investigated the educational effects of a generative AI-assisted Japanese self-introduction video project on learners' perceptions and Japanese language performance. A Project-Based Learning (PBL) approach was implemented with 23 university students, and data were collected through pre- and post-surveys, paired-samples t-tests, and qualitative content analysis. The results were as follows. First, learners' overall perceptions of Japanese learning significantly improved, with the mean score increasing from 3.44 to 4.33 (p < .001). Second, the use of D-ID Studio to create AI avatar videos reduced foreign language anxiety and encouraged learners to produce output more confidently. Third, learner satisfaction with the project was very high, with an average score of 4.81 out of 5.0, particularly regarding the practical learning environment and program design. In conclusion, these findings suggest that a generative AI-based Project-Based Learning (PBL) model can serve as an effective instructional approach for enhancing learning motivation, fostering self-directed learning, and improving practical Japanese language proficiency in university-level Japanese language education.
