AB - With the introduction of Chinese characters, the Japanese language underwent significant development. Some Japanese words share identical written forms with words in Chinese. However, even when the written forms are the same, their meanings are not always identical. This article focuses on the homograph "绮麗" in Japanese and Chinese and examines its referential scope and semantic meanings in both languages. Through this analysis, we identify the semantic changes that "绮麗" has undergone in the two languages and arrive at the following conclusions: after being adopted into Japanese, "kirei"gradually expanded its range of usage objects and developed new semantic meanings. In modern Japanese, it has even acquired meanings quite distinct from the original sense, such as "clean" and "without residue." In addition, this article analyzes the semantic differences between "kirei" and "utsukushi," which previous studies have not clearly addressed.
