Interests on social economy have recently grown up in Korean society. Since 20th century, the influence of social economy on region development has also increased through the transition of governance on dealing with economic and social issues from an unilateral lead of governmental bureaucratic organizations towards participation and cooperation of diverse stakeholders. In this context, social economy in Korea has diversely developed depending on its regional features, and also differently contributed to development of the region. This research tries to examine trends of researches that have been conducted under the theme “social economy and region development” for the last 7 years since 2010. The research has passed through two stages for systematic quantitative analysis: first, collecting articles that handled both social economy and region development in an academic search engine, RISS, and second, analysing individual articles. Total 39 articles have been primarily classified in terms of research methodology and analysed in terms of frequency of themes that are formulated based on important ingredients in social economy. Through research results, this research is expected to give an implication for future studies on social economy and region development studies by suggesting desireable research direction and academic development.

Since the 21st century, the rapid environmental changes such as globalization, changing the industrial structure, and aging society are hollowing out the local economy, and its sustainability is becoming critical in the future. It has been widely recognized that the social economy sector can play an essential role in the local development in the face of these rapid environmental changes. Especially the partnership governance between the local government and the social economy sector can be more effective in transforming the economy and politics for the local development. The best example of this governance is the Quebec experience since the late 1990s. This paper examines the core principles of the Quebec model and attempts to apply it to some Korean cases where similar development patterns are occurring such as Seongbuk-gu in Seoul Metropolitan City and Hong Seong-gun in the Chungnam Province to find out some similarities and differences and construct a useful model fit to the Korean context.

This paper examines the impact of caste system in Nepal. Although caste system has been proclaimed illegal in 1963, it still exerts a vast influence in Nepalese society regarding economic, educational, medical, and social dimensions. While higher caste people tend to live in urban area, lower cast people seem to live in rural area engaging in farming activities that do not require any special knowledge to perform. Although education is open to everybody in all castes and free for primary education, lower caste people have on average a lower level of education. A lower level of education is related to a lower level of income, as evidenced by a smaller amount of remittance income for a lower caste family. It seems to be caused by an inferior educational achievement where lower caste people do not receive proper education that allows them to learn knowledge and skill necessary for foreign jobs. In addition, lower caste people have a worse health condition. Lower caste people do not seem to pay enough attention to health due to poverty and ignorance caused by a lower level of education, which in turn leads to a lower level of income. However, the influence of cast system is getting weaker decreasing the degree of discrimination and a negative impact in society. People in lower cast tend to invest more in education and have more family members work in foreign countries. The remittance of lower caste family seems to be more important than that of higher caste family when compared with domestic income. Lower caste people also tend to believe more in Christian Protestant than higher caste people, which can be interpreted as lower caste people trying to avoid a religion that discriminates against them.
