ABSTRACT

Purpose: The study is to provide a guideline for designing a curriculum of nursing officers and for measuring educational achievements. For this, we defined competency of junior nursing officers and designed relevant competency model. Method: We extracted competency of junior nursing officers through the analyses of the data gathered from literature reviews and interviews. Also, in order to design our model, we conducted a survey for nursing officers' understandings on the level of importance and performance of competency model. Result: We found that the competency model of junior nursing officers was consisted of 61 items for 7 competencies and it was divided into 3 core competencies. Three core competencies, also, are categorized into three clusters: duty competency cluster, value competency and human management competency. Among the competencies we found, the most important competency was interpersonal competency, and the highest performance competency was personal trait competency. Based on the results of a survey for nursing officers' understandings on the level of importance and performance, we found that we should place the top priority on education efforts for developing competency for professional competency.
