ABSTRACT

Purpose : The purpose of this review was to assess the performance of health behaviors and to find the related factors among military personnel . Methods : A comprehensive literature review was done among studies conducted between 1995 and 2010. The survey aimed to find studies about military personnel's health behaviors using several electronic databases. The following keywords were used for the study: health and any one of military personnel, officers, soldiers, army, navy or air force. All studies found through the survey were evaluated on the basis of their relevance to the purpose of this study and they were screened for improving methodological quality. Results : Research investigators found broad heterogeneity across the 66 studies in regard to their stated aims, target populations, measured outcomes, measurement tools, and evaluation methods. Only 23 articles were methodologically adequate. The health behaviors of military personnel were measured by Health Promotion Lifestyle Profile (HPLP), Alameda 7, health weight control behavior, and so on. The average score of HPLP ranged between 1.98 and 2.75 on a 4-point scale. The highest score was observed in self-actualization, while the lowest scores were in exercise. Self-efficacy had significant correlations with health behaviors. Conclusion : It is necessary to develop intervention programs for military personnel's health behaviors. Three interventions are recommended: increasing exercise, enhancing nutrition, and using strategies for improving self-efficacy.
