ABSTRACT

Purpose : The purpose of this study was to describe demographic and air travel related characteristics of invalid passengers and to investigate flight irregularities and canceled or delayed travel cases. Methods : All invalid passenger reports for an airline medical department during year 2005 and 2009 were examined retrospectively. A total of 427 and 732 invalid passengers traveled or intended to travel in 2005 and 2009 respectively. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze and report distributions of data collected. Results : There were incidences of 56.92 invalid passengers per million passengers in 2005 and 85.83 in 2009. Passenger’s age, flight time, and medical clearance by airlines medical department were related to flight irregularities, such as medical diversion and death on board. A total of 2 cases of flight irregularities occurred in 2005 and 10 cases in 2009. Conclusion : The findings of this study highlighted the importance of coordination of health care professionals, airline medical department, and other related parts to ensure passengers’ safe travel and to prevent flight irregularities.
