ABSTRACT

Purpose : The purpose of this study was to identify the health beliefs, exercise compliance, muscular areas & strength of affected leg of leg cast removed patients at military hospitals, and to analyze correlation between health beliefs and exercise compliance as well as correlation between exercise compliance and muscular areas & strength of affected leg. Methods : On the day of cast removal, the subjects were asked to complete a self-report questionnaire about their health beliefs, and the researcher taught them how to exercise and provided them with an exercise guidance and encouraged exercise compliance. From the day of cast removal to the day before discharge, subjects recorded frequency of exercise per day. Circumferences, skinfold thickness and muscle strength of affected leg were measured on the day of cast removal and discharge by researcher. Muscle area was calculated by the formula using measured values of circumferences and skinfold thickness. Results : Mean of leg cast removed patients's health beliefs was 15.7 out of 25, and the perceived benefit was the highest among them. Mean frequency of exercise per day was 49.25, and muscular areas & strength of affected leg had significantly increased on the day of discharge compared to the day of cast removal. The perceived susceptibility and benefits positively correlated with exercise compliance respectively. The difference between the day of cast removal and discharge of mid-calf muscular areas and knee extensor & flexor strength and ankle plantarflexor strength of affected leg positively correlated with exercise compliance respectively. Conclusion : It can be concluded that the perceived benefit is the highest among health beliefs, and the perceived susceptibility and benefits increase as exercise compliance increased. Also it can be demonstrated that mid-calf muscular areas and knee extensor & flexor and ankle plantarflexor strength of affected leg increased with exercise compliance.
