ABSTRACT

Purpose : As the Korean society became more culturally diverse, it reformed its Military Service Law by making it an obligation for offsprings from international marriage couples to serve in the military. The purpose of this study is to examine the level of cultural awareness and empathy and to understand correlation of cultural awareness and empathy in nursing academy cadets. Methods : The survey was conducted for the entire Armed Forces Nursing Academy cadets from July 6 to July 20, 2012. Cultural awareness and empathy were measured using the Cuevas’s Cultural Awareness Scale (CAS) and the Davis's Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI), respectively. Pearson’s correlation coefficient analysis was performed to examine correlation variables. Results : The level of cultural awareness and empathy were 4.0±0.41(5point scale), 4.0±0.37(6point scale). Cultural awareness was positively associated with fantasy(r=.19, p=.002), perspective taking(r=.16, p=.011), empathic concern(r=.18, p=.003), and personal distress(r=.17, p=.005). Conclusion : The findings highlight that direct contact experience with minorities needs to be integrated into the nursing academy cadets curriculum to increase cultural awareness.
