ABSTRACT

Purpose : This study was designed to examine characteristics of tinnitus handicap of solider patients and to confirm the relationship between victims of tinnitus‘s mental health problems and the handicap caused by tinnitus. Methods : The data were collected from 233 discharged soldiers, and 114 active- duty soldiers diagnosed with tinnitus and treated as outpatients Armed Forces Hospital from March 2012, for 6 Months. The instruments were Tinnitus Handicap Inventory, The Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and Beck Scale for Suicide Ideation. The data were analyzed using Descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation coefficients, t-test and ANOVA. Results : Average THI score was 68.24 and 68.5% reported high severity grades with THI score. Average depression score, sleep disorder score and suicidal ideation score was 33.93, 9.03 and 4.17, respectively. Positive correlations between THI and depression(r=0.679), THI and sleep disorder(r=.466), THI and suicide ideation(r=.438) were demonstrated. Conclusion : The study recognizes that tinnitus and depression are not in a unilateral relationship; instead, they are in a strong correlational relationship. Study confirms that as the period of a person suffering from tinnitus increases, psychological, social effects and conflicts with other family members also increase, which may lead patients into depressed mental conditions. Depression disturbs patients from adapting to the tinnitus conditions, and may even lead to suicidal ideation.
