ABSTRACT

Purpose: This study aimed to identify the contents and effects of eXtended reality (XR)-based nursing practice of student nurses through systematic review. Methods: Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines, we conducted a systematic review using seven electronic databases, including PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane, CINAHL, KoreaMed, RISS, and KISS. The search terms included 'Virtual Reality (VR)', 'Mixed Rreality(MR)', 'Augmented Reality(AR)', 'eXtended Reality(XR)', 'metaverse', 'intervention', and 'nursing student'. Out of 700studies retrieved, 17studies were finally included. Results: Six out of the 17 studies had randomized controlled trial (RCT) designs. Regarding the type of XR, VR was the most common, with 12 studies using it, followed by 4 studies on AR and 1 on MR. The areas of nursing practice covered a variety of topics, including medication administration, gastrointestinal nutrition, infection control, physical assessment, and emergency nursing. Nursing practice using XR resulted in a statistically significant increase in knowledge and skills, and in some studies, it also improved confidence, educational satisfaction, and self-efficacy. Limitations of the included studies were the lack of rigorous methodological research design and the potential for a risk of bias. Conclusion: While further research is needed to accumulate more evidence, XR-based nursing practice has the potential to enhance nursing students' competencies and patient safety, addressing the limitations of clinical practice. Future research should focus on greater rigor and more comprehensive reporting of study details.
