ABSTRACT

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to categorize and explore the types of perceptions that male and female nurses working in military hospitals have about the profession of male nurse officers, using the Q-methodology. Methods: We conducted Q sorting of 38 statements with 36 participants, including male and female nursing officers and civilian nurses working in military hospitals. Results: The perceptions of male nurse officers' profession among military hospital nurses were identified as four types. Type 1 is 'Unrecognized' in which male nursing officers are professional nurses, but do not receive sufficient treatment or recognition from others. Type 2 'Adaptable' views male nursing officers as well adapted to the female-dominated environment, experiencing less conflict with female nurses. Type 3 'Male strengths and limitations' indicates that male nursing officers have advantages but also face job restrictions due to their gender. Type 4 'Highly contributive' perceives male nursing officers as actively engaged and well suited for nursing tasks. Conclusion: The findings of this study can enhance positive occupational perceptions of male nurse officers while helping to resolve problematic ones. These insights should be applied to develop clinical adaptation strategies and educational resources that support their effective adjustment to the nursing environment.
