ABSTRACT

Purpose: This study aimed to develop a teaching-learning plan for emergency and trauma nursing courses by identifying learning concepts through an analysis of clinical demands and priorities, and to utilize such plan for Korea Armed Forces Nursing Academy (KAFNA) undergraduate nursing course. Methods: Based on a needs assessment survey, the study identified educational priorities for junior military nursing officers and developed a teaching-learning plan including didactic and practical components. Nursing officers who graduated from KAFNA within 3 years were asked to identify and prioritize the education needs. A panel of experts conducted a content validity evaluation. Results: A review on statistical data on emergency and trauma patient cases during the last 3 years identified 54 educational contents. To assess the educational needs for these 54 contents, a survey was conducted with 53 military nursing officers. The priority of these needs was determined using the Borich Needs Assessment Model. The contents that fall within the top 40% were selected. The core nursing skills required to achieve the educational goals were also added. A teaching-learning weekly plan was created and its content validity was verified by a panel of experts, leading to the formation of a 15-session teaching-learning plan. Conclusion: This study provides a teaching-learning plan that reflects real-world clinical demands, which will enhance the practical skills of military nursing students. The teaching-learning plan is expected to improve the adaptation of military nurses to emergency and trauma situations, ultimately contributing to advancement of patient safety and healthcare quality.
