ABSTRACT

The purpose of this research is to identify the generic history in which historical dramas have developed in Korea from 1964 to the present. Historical drama is redefined by five sub-genres―history-based, historical probability, imaginative, typical, melodramatic. According to the forms and content, the period of historical drama is divided as 1964〜1972, 1973〜1980, 1981〜1994, and 1995〜2005. It is the early historical drama that dramatized classic novel, legend, and melodramatic characterization. It is assumed that the audience considers watching historical dramas as listening old stories. From 1973 to 1980, the historical drama genre was dominated by a melodramatic and a historical probability genre. While the melodramatic historical drama, as the daily drama, dealt with the sadness of ancient women, a historical probability drama represented nationalism as a dominant ideology. History-based drama was emergent in the mid 1980s, focusing on historial backgrounds and power relationship beyond character-oriented styles. New historical drama, called imaginative drama, has been popular since the mid 1990s. It attempts to depict individual human beings in their mental complexity and spiritual depth. depending on author's historical imagination, rather than historical documents. In addition, it makes new stylistics of historical drama which has blended a wide range of conventions and aesthetics from trendy drama, melodrama and comedy.
