ABSTRACT

This thesis studied the theatrical differentiation in 1970s which shows its correlative action, and the aspects of theatrical culture originated from it, on the premise that a theatre as a system should be a major part building the contemporary theatrical culture. The theatre in 1970s which was divided into a government theatre and a private small theatre existed in a rule of each different systems. A government theatre existed as a lawful performance place and a private small-theatre as an illegal place to be controlled. For example, national theatre produced many historical plays with a main subject of a specific ideology and many political goal plays like Saemaeul plays. On the other hand, private small theatre had a difficulty to make a role to be the center of small theatre movement because of legal restrictions such as performance law. The drama experiment of small theatre, owing to self-censorship for its existence, inclined to be too dramatic or commercial. However the theatre in 1970s formed the basis to make a conception of theatre for dramas and stage arts and to make the various experiments of Korean dramas. Furthermore, small theatre, by accepting ‘tradition’ and ‘world’ as a contemporary play, made a crack in standardized theatrical culture nation-intended. Namely, the theatre in 1970s was a space that political and cultural conflicts and discords workd dynamically each other.
