ABSTRACT

In this paper, I examine the relationship between stage drama and ‘mass media drama’ of Geokyeon (劇硏), focusing on the repertories of radio drama and phonograph record drama. For the further understanding of the drama art movement by Geokyeon, it is necessary to analyze the mass media drama such as radio drama, phonograph drama and the stage drama as well. The repertories of radio drama by Geokyeon consist of the translated(adopted) dramas, created dramas, and traditional dramas just like stage dramas, with various forms such as selection of a one-act dramas or multi-act dramas and serial radio dramas. Their participation in radio drama broadcasting means the attempt to make the most use of radio media for the stage of their drama art movement. Even though the recording stopped just for one time, the phonograph record dramas of Geokyeon are extremely valuable auditory materials for the studies of Geokyeon and modern Korean drama for checking the real performances of Geokyeon. Especially, the phonograph record dramas are very useful to understand the characteristics of the acting and direction of stage dramas of Geokyeon, and to analogize the aesthetics of radio dramas in those days. Mass media drama of Geokyeon contributed to modern Korean drama by creating of new ‘stage’ and the formation of the regular programming and hearing habits of radio drama. But their tries leave some problems such as the lack of scripts only for radio drama and propensity to stage drama repertory etc.
