ABSTRACT

This paper examines the silent film narrator(Byeŏnsa) as a performer and the relation between the narrator and the public entertainment. So far the film narrator has been regarded mainly as a film commentator who could not but mistranslate the film because his job was the verbalization of the images on the screen. Therefore he always has been located on the border or the circumference. However this paper expanded the narrator's field into the theater where staged theatres, performances, and films to transpose the narrator from the border/circumference to the center of the popular culture and entertainment. This paper suggests that the film narrators were the first modern entertainers. The concept of a 'performance' which emphasizs the liveliness and interaction between the film and the audience will make us recognize the whole process of the fim-making and the spectatorship. That is to say, it could include not only the film itself but also the film narrator, musicians and the audience as all the all important elements.
