ABSTRACT

The purpose of this article is to investigate the progress of imported and translated- musicals, roughly and to examine the tendency of decoding for about a half century in the field of Korean musical. In conclusion, the narratives of repertoire ranges from about races, history and religion to about love, joys and sorrows of a non-mainstream groups, death and the gothic fantasy. In this process, the divergent cultures represented in the translated-musicals have been gradually translated on the literal level and could be accepted by the musical masses. These changes reflect the following factors; firstly, the Korean political reality or the traditional conventions of the popular narratives had priority to others in the early time of translation. Secondly, the typical conventions of musicals were canonized. Lastly, now, the taste of musical masses are considered as the critical references for translation. Thus, it can be said that, through this kind of ranges and contents of changes, the field of Korean musicals has been expanded drastically as well as quickly and entered in the time of cultural industry. Therefore, if we examine the field of Korean musicals through the conception of translation, we can encounter the dynamic faces of translated-musicals. However, there are some limits in this article related to the discussion about the whole dynamic aspects. It is because this article could not include the concrete aspects of Korean original musical under the influence of translated-musicals and the condition which the feel of material of music transcendentally formulates the concept of musical.
