ABSTRACT

“Settle Dongil textile company’s affairs” performed by its fired laborers in 1978, represents a democratic labor againstthedictatorial military government. It is believed to be “first for a labor movement.” “Settle Dongil textile company’s affairs.” Laborers fired by Dongil textile company was treated unfairly, but naturally the case was covered up by suppression of the press acted by the dictatorial military government in those days. As fired laborers had been trying to tell the public their unfair treatment in the most effective way, they chose the play. The play initially focused on disclosing the social contradiction done by the ruling class. They used dramatic devices of “the role exchange”, “chorus” and “narrator” to reveal a clever oppression against laborers by the ruling class. These dramatic devices gave an audience the exact understanding of the ruling class. The exposure to the contradiction done by the ruling class caused the same sense with audiences. This same sense aimed for the union of laborers and audiences. Laborers’ unified will was expressed in the state of a struggle against hostile contradiction. This playisfullofinthatlaborersthemselvesleadafieldlabormovementthrough situational truth of “Madang play” which represents the feelings of the public. Laborers, who had been onlookers in the play, strived to deal with the current affairs with the public through a affirmative play. “Settle Dongil textile company’s affairs” is significant in that it is the first play of all the play for a labor movement.
