ABSTRACT

Ki Kukseo, director of theatre company 76, is one of the important directors in 1980ㆍ90s. But serious research of him have not been done yet. Ki Kukseo mainly directed translated play so he is in handicapped position to be admitted originality as writer. But Ki Kukseo's translated play were close to our real life and recognized as experimental theatre, not the original itself but the director's version. For instance, Ki Kukseo's Hamlet, Shakespeare's Hamlet was substituted to 5ㆍ18, showed daring political consciousness and was important work in history of Korean theatre of 1980s. So in this paper, aggressive analysis on Ki Kukseo was attempted by his work―Ki Kukseo's Hamlet. He had been grown with western culture and college culture and small theatre 76(1977~1980) was a place of meeting and discussion of young artists at that time. The Ki Kukseo's Hamlet was a play which expressed the political interest of young people gathering to small theatre 76 and gave deep impact to contemporary audience. But after 10 years from the 5ㆍ18, Ki Kukseo's Hamlet 4-5 faced to political cynicism and nihilism. In 1980s Ki Kukseo showed avant-garde practice as experimental theatre with political color, but in 1990s Ki Kukseo's political color became powerless with de-political mood of Postmodernism. Therefore Ki Kukseo's avant-garde and experiment passed batton to new directors of 1990s and Ki Kukseo and theatre company 76 were appraised as important link of experimental theatre to 1990s from 1970s.
