Familiarity in Television Drama: Interplay between Defamiliarization and Refamiliarization - Focusing on the Secret Garden

ABSTRACT

This paper aims to discuss that how the Secret Garden is defamiliarized from television drama's typicality and reality and how these defamiliarization is refamiliarized audience's familiarity and usualness. This work represents unrealistic events that can't occur in the audience's life and this absence of reality is set a puzzle for the audience. To perceive elements of the unrealistic events in the text is to perform a producing an intelligible narrative and its meaning. In the Secret Garden, the defamiliarization from reality is connected with the genre convention as 'melodrama' which is associated with the family, fate, and accomplishment of love and as 'fantasy'. This connection allows the audience fills up the absence of reality and get to a sense of stability. Besides, the Secret Garden is a text that is asking the change of being through unrealistic events like the soul change. In Television drama that represent fictional texts with a visual-audio image, the change of being is perceived and communicated to the audience by actor's 'body' and 'face'. There is a discordance between the character's visual image and identity in the Secret Garden, the audience understand character's change of behavior in respect of a knowledge of suitability of behavior patterns and character's personality, and can construct a sense of fit for character. In the Secret Garden, the visual information is in discord with character's identity. This allows the audience constructs the meaning between the character's image and feeling with imagination. On the other hand voice-over and inserted change of scenes make the audience is immersed in character's feeling with television drama's image making convention. But this device is deviated from flow of the scenes. Therefore the audience perceives familiarity and the strange at the same time. The Secret Garden is worthy of notice for its playing with defamiliarization from familiarity and with refamiliarization about the usual. Because of this playing, the Secret Garden is assessed as the work shown a unique imagination, and is accepted wholeheartedly to the audience. This Secret Gardens' remarkable point can be starting point for discuss the television drama's familiarity and the usual.
