AB - This study aims to conduct preparatory research for the establishment of adaptation methodology. Literature has intervened in various stages of the process where the motion picture develops into the movies. As a source of movie contents, and as an exemplary form of sequential description method, the literature has had close relationship with the movies. The most important thing in adaptation is an exact understanding of the unique characteristics of the media that lie between the original and the movie. Though the movies aim at the same thematic consciousness as the original, a transformation has to occur due to the changes of media. The change of a thematic consciousness requires the creation of the conditions that make it possible. This may be possible through the changes of the elements that compose the given circumstances, characters and events. The direction of the work to modify, eliminate or add the individual elements is decided by the through-going action of the characters who can embody the thematic consciousness. Thus, it is the through-going action of the characters that should be first fixed during the adaptation process. The through-going action imply the narrative impetus, which is produced by the proactive actions of the characters who wish to satisfy their desires. Next, the probability of the through-going action should be secured through the changes of the given circumstances and characters. In the process, the imagination for the narrative filling-in is essential for an adapter. The imagination for the narrative filling-in should be continuously exercised in the process of reorganizing the fabula based on the syuzhet of the original and also in the subsequent adaptation process where the new syuzhets are produced.
